Criticism

OK, what are your thoughts on critiquing art here? I've been a little harsher in my critiques lately. Not to be mean, but because I believe that that's why we're here. If no one tells the emperor that he has no clothes, he won't know. I've received some good critisism lately and I greatly appreciate it. I love the pat on the back, but only if it's sincere. If you notice something about my work that doesn't seem right, tell me! I think of it as a favour, not something to get upset about. I was talking to a friend here recently about the importance of overcoming the sensitivity towards critisism that we all have. If you want to grow, it's imperitive. Criticism and rejection is a part of every artist's life. Those who've been around long enough know this. Some of the younger and/or newer artists may feel that they're being personally attacked. I think the key is CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. Don't complain about something if you have no idea how to fix it. I guess what I'm asking is, would you like more helpful critiques or should i just cut-and-paste "awesome!" everywhere? However, if everything you do is perfect and you've never erred, disregard this.

Is everybody in? The ceremony is about to begin...

coming from my fine arts background, i miss a good crit. the ones that made everyone cry, and burn thier paintings that they spent a week on. wait. what? yep. i am that cold.. however... only because what you said above is critical, and absolutely correct!..without criticism, there is no growth, and also no repetition, and stagnation....the main reason i don't crit here like i could is because, the times i've tried ( with a few exceptions) i got really snappy replies, and some really hurt feelings..... and i still am new to digital art, so what i may see as possible.. may not be.....

personally, i like to ask a person what they were trying to say with a piece, or series, and go from there... kind of like a psychiatrist might do from a couch.... it allows the artist to provide their own crit, and thus discoveries, while making you a keener observer, and listener..... i don't REALLY miss the crits where people cried, and quit art classes altogether,, but i am SO tired of cool!.. and comments on models in images like they were on a fucking suicide girl's site for example:"yummy!" " :disbelief: she's HOT".. instead of "was this image meant as a statement of introspection, and self-exploration, or were you going more for a feeling of invulnerability, and comfort in the face of what could very obviously be an uncomfortable situation ( posting nudes of yourself?)"

but then again, mr. bark.. you, as always are in that small handful of ARTISTS here who are here to learn, expand, and grow... and unfortunately.. no matter how hard we try.. most of them won't get it.. or even want to... but of course.. they tell all their friends about their art...

god, i sound bitter, old, and very, very tired....

always feel free to crit me.. in any way... at the least, i can explain why i did something, or what i was trying to achieve, and ( apparently) couldn't.. at the most.. i may be given some insight, and *gasp* grow ^^

thank you once again for being a voice of artistic integrity.. many people admire you, perhaps they actually take some of your ideas, and words to heart....
I have to agree with you here....critisism is really important. I appreciate it when its specific and makes me look at something in a new light.
I have been slacking off with my commenting lately (of which I am deeply ashamed), just giving a :+fav: when I like something alot. Usually I like to say why I fav something if I do- otherwise it can mean very little to the artist. Infact in my own gallery the things I dislike seem to have the most fav's and I cant figure out why
Anyway, I am totally with you on this important issue of constructive critiquing.

I love criticizm! :boogie: feel free to tear up any of my pieces ;) The teacher I have for drawing this semester is quite strict, especially in his beginning classes. I remember years ago when I first tried taking his drawing 1 class my mind wasn't in the right place and I was smoking weed all the time and goofing around, and I found his criticizm a little much hehehehe. but after I quite smoking and got serious about school I found that I looked forward to his criticizms and as soon as I started shaping up and learning from mistakes, he warmed up quite a bit, and was always giving me advice, and in a much nicer fashion hehehe. so yeah, I'm always down for people pointing out what is wrong or what could use some work.
however! I'm horrible with critiquing other peoples work! I find it difficult to try to find something bad about someones work... I guess I try to see everything in the best light possible. then again, it's not like I have an incredible amount of experience when it comes to viewing other peoples art, or learning about styles, techniques or whatever.... since I just kinda do my own thing. But if I see something you do that needs some work, I'll let ya know :D

I really appreciate constructive crit. Sometimes you get people who'll just say something stupid that has no constructive value, but most of the time I think people can learn a lot from having an honest opinion, you just need to take a little time to word it right.
My last art teacher was great at it, amazing guy. He wasn't afraid to say what he thought but it wouldn't be in a nasty way, like he once pretty much said that something I'd done was crap, but it was and he didn't say that it was crap, just something or other that got me to think about why it was wrong

I haven't seen a constructiv criticism for ages here.... I somehow gave up too :( But it's just that criticism hurt ppl's ego which is sad.

 Giving yourself entirely will make you complete.. But be ready for the long journey
I truly agree. Constructive criticism.. that's it. It helps us notice our mistakes, and try to avoid them in the future. Our life should depend on trials, failures..
I guess..

I agree with you. I think the key is constructive criticism. Anyone who is serious about their art understands that that is part of the growth process. If no one ever tells me what they find off about my work, then I can't figure out what to work on to get better. It's too hard to judge yourself.

Personally I appreciate criticism when it's constructively given. A lot of people are too afraid to do anything but pat someone on the back, which is fine, but it doesn't help them grow as an artist. If people don't want critiques on their pieces, they should make use of the function that specifies that on their so the rest of us know not to say anything if it's critical in nature.

I agree, I love getting the advice it's helped me immensely!

Please spay or neuter your pets! :jackdirt:
YES CONSTRUCTIVE criticism is key, but when your getting critiqued by a thousand 15 year olds who's only has a fine art history is writing repetitive goth poetry on deviant art you tend not to take it seriously. . ;)
