TINNITUS

that sound again.
every damned time the world quiets down a bit
it rises

electricity humming through wires
trains rumbling over tracks
screeching air raid sirens
countless people moaning
praying
crying

locusts ravaging
crows screaming
clocks ticking tocks
chopping blocks

that damned sound.
always there, but welling up in the quiet of the night
the true sound of the world
to those cursed to have an ear
to hear.
